Black History Month in construction: Lade Ogunlaja
To mark Black History Month 2024, we speak to Lade Ogunlaja, who won the Allies Award at the recent CITB Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction Awards. A construction project manager who has worked on major projects in Nigeria and the UK, Lade is a qualified civil engineer who is a passionate advocate for diversity, equality and sustainability in the construction industry.
Can you tell us about your background and how you initially got involved in the construction industry?
Lade: “I’m a construction project consultant focused on sustainability, modular housing, and inclusive practices. My career focuses on advocating for Net Zero objectives and promoting eco-friendly construction solutions that achieve environmental goals while creating innovative spaces.
My journey in construction began with a fascination for its transformative power to shape environments and enhance lives. This passion for integrating sustainable practices drives my commitment to fostering a future where the construction sector is both environmentally responsible and inclusive for all.”
What does Black History Month mean to you personally?
Lade: “Black History Month holds profound personal significance for me, serving as a time for reflection, celebration, and unwavering commitment to social justice. It honours the countless contributions, resilience, and achievements of black individuals throughout history, many of whose stories have been unjustly overlooked or marginalised. This month reminds us of the ongoing struggle for equity and justice, and the importance of understanding our shared history.
“As an advocate for inclusivity in the construction industry, Black History Month inspires me to break down barriers and create spaces where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive. It serves as a constant reminder of the value of diversity and the power of collective action. By celebrating the achievements of black leaders and innovators, we can inspire the next generation to pursue their dreams and contribute to a more equitable future.”
Why do you think it’s important to encourage a diverse workforce within construction?
Lade: “Encouraging a diverse workforce in construction is vital, as diversity drives innovation, enhances decision-making, and fosters collaboration. When individuals from various backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences come together, they contribute unique ideas and solutions that elevate the quality and creativity of construction projects. A diverse workforce ensures that projects better reflect the needs of the communities they serve, leading to more inclusive and sustainable outcomes.
“Promoting diversity also addresses long-standing gender and racial inequalities within the industry. It creates opportunities for underrepresented groups, encourages broader participation, and cultivates a more equitable environment for all. This, in turn, strengthens the industry by bringing in fresh talent and perspectives, helping it remain competitive and adaptable to future challenges.”
How have you seen the construction industry change across your career?
Lade: “Throughout my career, I have witnessed significant changes in the construction industry, particularly a growing emphasis on sustainability and innovation. There is now a major shift toward eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, and reduced environmental impact, driven by the demand for sustainable practices. Net Zero objectives, once an emerging concept, are now a central goal in many projects, with technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and drones, which enhance efficiency and collaboration.
Have you seen improvements to encourage a more diverse workforce?
Lade: “Yes, I have seen encouraging improvements in fostering a more diverse workforce in construction. There is a stronger push for initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion, such as mentorship programs that provide guidance to women and underrepresented groups, helping to break down barriers to career progression.
Additionally, there is a growing focus on STEM education and outreach to encourage young people from diverse backgrounds to consider careers in construction. Organisations are also addressing the gender pay gap and offering flexible working arrangements. Initiatives like Girls Under Construction demonstrate that diversity enhances innovation and overall project success.
How do you see the future of diversity in construction, and what role do you hope to play in shaping it?
Lade: “I foresee a construction industry that serves as a cornerstone of our infrastructure and reflects the diverse communities it supports. By embracing diversity and inclusion, we can create a more equitable and innovative environment where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed.
“As an advocate for Girls Under Construction, I am dedicated to driving positive change. By promoting flexible working conditions, equitable opportunities, and mentorship programs, we can inspire the next generation of women and underrepresented individuals to pursue careers in construction. Together, we can build an industry that is stronger and truly representative of the communities it serves.”
What does "building a more inclusive future" in construction mean to you?
Lade: “It means creating an industry where everyone, regardless of gender, race, or background, has equal opportunities to thrive and lead. It involves breaking down barriers that limit diversity and fostering a culture that values diverse perspectives. Inclusion extends beyond recruitment; it ensures that all individuals feel supported, respected, and empowered. This includes creating pathways for career growth, addressing pay gaps, and promoting work-life balance. Ultimately, an inclusive future transforms construction into a space where innovation thrives through diverse ideas, benefiting the communities we serve and enabling the next generation to excel.
