Joinery competition overview
A joiner works with timber to construct doors, windows, fitted furniture and other permanent fixtures within buildings. They will often prepare items in a workshop before going to the site to install the completed items.
Joiners work with many types of timber and other construction materials to create a variety of internal and external work such as staircases, windows, doors, furniture, kitchens, cupboards and interior woodwork. Joiners can work on heritage projects that require traditional skills to preserve, repair or recreate joinery work from the past or restore historic buildings. Joiners use a range of equipment from traditional tools such as saws, chisels, planes and drills through to state-of-the-art computerised cutting equipment and hi-tech drawing and design software. Their skills are a valuable mix of traditional and modern craftsmanship.
The competition has been designed to reflect the role of a joiner and the standards that are expected within the construction industry.
