Use the navigation buttons to the right and select a stage of building to discover that there are more job roles in construction than you think.
Roles in construction
Long before a single brick is laid, lots of people work to design buildings, plan work,
source
materials and acquire land.
Roles in construction
Often an old building will have to be taken down to build a new one, or stripped bare and built back up to be given a new purpose.
Roles in construction
No matter the size or height of a building, as much work takes place below ground as above to build foundations and connect it to infrastructure like power, plumbing and transport
Roles in construction
The super structure is the skeleton of the building – the bit that you can’t see, but holds everything upright and together. This is normally made from steel, wood, bricks, concrete or a combination of these materials.
Roles in construction
First fixing creates the interior structure such as ceilings, floors, pipes and wires. Second fixing covers this up with the things you see in the finished building such as window and doorframes, sockets and switches.
Roles in construction
The third fixing includes making it look like a building you would use by painting and decorating and installing light fittings, or kitchen units. Everything is checked and tested, then signed as complete.
Roles in construction
All buildings have a lifespan, and are regularly maintained to stop them degrading, and repaired when they do. They often also need managing if they are rented out like an office, shop or home, or perform a function such as a factory.
